Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
Years 7 and 8
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is a mandatory subject for Years 7 to 10 that students must complete to acquire their School Certificate. It is a course that is designed to develop understanding, skills, knowledge, values and attitudes associated with living a healthy and productive lifestyle. At Chatswood High School it incorporates literacy, technology, organisational and study skills that can be utilised in all subject areas.
PDHPE is a mandatory subject in Years 7 and 8. Students have three PDHPE lessons each fortnight. Fifty percent of this time is committed to theory work and fifty percent to practical work. Students are assessed each year through two in class practical assessments, a major written assessment and an end of year examination.
To enhance learning in PDHPE, the skills of communicating, decision making, interacting, planning and problem solving are enmeshed throughout the program. It is a course that is designed to develop knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes associated with living a healthy and productive lifestyle. Integrated Sport - Years 7 & 8
Years 7 & 8 undertake an integrated sports program taught by specialist teachers which is designed to develop skills and understanding in a variety of sports preparing them for grade sport competition in Years 9, 10 & 11. Students are placed into teams, where fun is emphasised over competition.
Years 9 and 10

PASS
Students in Years 9 and 10 also have the opportunity of studying the elective Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) course. Students look at a broader view of physical activity and the many possible contexts in which individuals can build activity into their lifestyle. Students participate in a wide range of lifelong physical activities, including recreational, leisure and adventure pursuits, competitive and non-competitive games, individual and group physical fitness activities. The course is built around three major content strands which are Foundations of Physical Activity, Physical Activity and Sport in Society and Enhancing Participation and Performance. The course allows students to engage in some activities that are not available at school and experience skills at a higher level. These include golf, rock climbing, squash, ten pin bowling and the alpine snow trip.
Year 11 and 12
2 Unit PD/Health/PE
Students study aspects of PDHPE which are of relevance to all young people. Study represents a breadth of learning in areas which build on knowledge and skills learned in Stages 4 and 5, including individual and community health as well as a detailed study of movement and physical activity. The syllabus also offers a significant options component designed to enable students to specialise in chosen areas. PDHPE is the fourth most popular subject studies in the state and gives students the knowledge to pursue further studies in the areas of Health or Human Movement.
Special events
Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals are an annual event for the whole school where everyone can compete, support their house and have a lot of fun. Year 7 also participate in the Surf Educate program and junior years compete in an annual Gala Day against other local schools. Years 7 & 8 have the opportunity to travel to Homebush where they undertake an intensive gymnastics program. PASS and Year 11 Preliminary PDHPE students have the opportunity to experience 3 days at the snow, skiing and snowboarding. Year 11 & 12 have also had the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge base with activities in Biomechanics, Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness and Training, offered at the University of Sydney and NSW.
