Mathematics

Mathematics in Stage 4

Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) is taught in six strands - Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Statistics and Problem Solving. Assessment occurs across the year, although there is extra assessment on the extension work done by the two selective classes in Year 7 and the Gifted and Talented class in Year 8.

SNAP

All students sit for the SNAP test in May, an external statewide test of numeracy across the curriculum.

Mathematics in Stage 5

Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) is divided into three levels - Advanced, Intermediate and Standard - to cater for individual levels of student skill and achievement. Ranking occurs at the end of Year 8, although individuals may change levels during Year 9 and, in exceptional cases, in Year 10.

Mathematics in Stage 6

Year 11

Levels offered for Preliminary study are Extension 1, Mathematics and General Mathematics. Students may enter the Extension 1 course if they have gained a Band 5 or 6 pass, plus Advanced A and B passes at the School Certificate. They need an exceptional understanding of Algebra.

The prerequisite for undertaking the Mathematics course in Year 11 is Advanced Mathematics or an outstanding achievement at Intermediate level in the School Certificate. This course is also Calculus based and requires a good understanding of algebraic techniques and logic.

General Mathematics (UAI) is open to School Certificate Intermediate or Standard students. It is also a difficult course, but more practical than the preceding two courses.

Year 12

The HSC course begins in Term 4 of Year 11.

Extension 2 Mathematics is studied for 17 periods per cycle, 8 of which are outside the normal timetable. Entry to this course is by invitation. Students must apply to enter and they will be interviewed. Criteria for entry would be: excellent results in Mathematics and Extension 1, plus an excellent attendance record in all classes. Students can only drop subjects after the trial period of Term IV expires.

Extension 1 Mathematics HSC is a continuation of the Preliminary course and students must have completed that course to a satisfactory standard.

Mathematics is a continuation of the Preliminary course, provided that has been completed to a satisfactory standard. The same applies to HSC General Mathematics.

Otherwise students may choose to do Applied Mathematics for Year 12, or drop Maths altogether.

Students may choose Applied Mathematics (a Board Endorsed Course, non UAI) if they have met only some of the outcomes of the Preliminary General Maths course. Applied Maths is devised by the school and focuses on skills needed in VET courses. Students study mathematics applicable to everyday situations.
