English as a Second Language (ESL)
The English Department provides courses which implement the Syllabus Outcomes for Stage 4/5 English (Years 7 to 10) and Stage 6 English (Years 11 and 12). These courses provide the framework in which students learn and develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening while studying a wide range of literary and non-literary texts. English courses in all years focus on the development of literacy skills of all students. Class programs differentiate the curriculum to provide for the needs of a student population that is diverse in cultural and language backgrounds.
In Years 7 to 10, students study a range of literary texts including novels, plays and poetry. There is study of Shakespearean texts in these years and film and media studies are included in the program. The development of ICT skills are embedded in the units of work completed in each year. For students preparing for the Higher School Certificate, the English Department offers the full range of English courses (Advanced, Standard, ESL, Extension 1, Extension 2, English Fundamentals).
